Who IS this kid?

One of the hardest lessons I have learned as a parent thus far is this; my kid is not me.  We always say we want them to be their own person. We want them to explore life and discover what really makes them tick.  Somewhere deep inside though, (at least for me) lies this little morsel of expectation that (s)he is going to be just like me.  She will like the same kinds of people, listen to the same kinds of music.  Her emotions and reactions to circumstances will mimic the way mine were at her age.  For me, this stemmed from a need to understand my daughter.  If I knew exactly what she was thinking or feeling, I could be her hero.  I could tell her, “I know just how you feel…”.

As Ashley my (16 year old fireball) entered her teen years, it became apparent that I had no idea what she was thinking.  Or why she was thinking it. Or how she really felt about it.  I certainly had an idea based on my own experiences, but all I could really do in most situations was empathize.

When it hit home that my daughter was nothing like me, it was two things.  First of all, it was scary.  How can I be any help to her if I can’t tell her I know what she is going through?  Secondly, and ironically, there was a sense of relief.  I could relax to some extent.  Let her work through things her own way instead of telling her how I think she should handle a particular situation.

Ashley and I compliment each other.  Being so different allows for really interesting, philosophical conversation.  Sometimes her perspective makes more sense to me than my own and vise versa.

I am learning as a mom that my primary focus is just to love her. And that’s easy.  Understanding her all the time?  No so much.  And I now know that that’s Okay!

Have you made this realization with one or more of your kids?  What impact did it have on you? Were you surprised?  Tell me your thoughts in the comment box!

Yours, O LORD, …

His love endures.....

His love endures…..

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.~~1 Chronicles 29:11

Did you notice the word “everything” in the above quote?  That means everything. Our home, our car, our pets, our lives.

A few years back my husband and I were having some financial struggles.  Amidst all of it, our furnace stopped working. In the middle of winter.  In the middle of the coldest week of that winter. In the middle of a Sunday when even if we could afford the repairs, there was no one to call.

Instead of panicking, we looked at each other and had the same thought.  It’s not OUR furnace anyways.  Then we looked up and said “Hey God!  Fix your furnace would you!”

We left it at that and headed out to what happened to be a bible study on managing your finances in a biblical way.  We were gone about 3 hours.  Not once did we think about our ailing furnace.

It wasn’t until later that evening when we had been home several hours that it occurred to us.  The furnace was running!  It had been running since we got home and we didn’t even realize it.

Why are we so surprised when God comes through for us?  He never lets us down.  Yet we are always so amazed when He shows us His faithfulness.

In the coming week, ask God to take care of that rattle in His car or that leaky faucet.  Have faith!  He will come through for you.  It might be a sudden fix, or maybe it will be a financial solution to help you afford repairs; But He is faithful to the end.

Take some time to listen to this song and give it all to Him.

God is Alive and well – how much proof do you need?

Ya know – so many of us allow questions to take over our thoughts.  We ask “What if God is nothing more than a bronze statue?” “Why does God allow bad things to happen?” “Where is God when innocent children are shot and killed?”  We also question our own faith….faith we have been taught since childhood.

Here’s the thing – I don’t have the answers.  I am as broken and confused as anyone else.  I am nothing but a beautiful mess trying to navigate my way through life.  Most of the time I can’t even see where I am going – but I go anyways; because time has a way of going by whether we want it to or not.

Here is just something to think about….music.  Christianity – having a relationship with a living God – is the only belief system wherein there is an entire industry of music.  Christian artists range anywhere from hard metal to instrumental.  There is something for everyone.  How and why would such a large industry exist if there was not a living God pouring His spirit over it?

Sure there are songs about buddha  and various gods, but Christian music is huge.  I would even venture to say that if you were to listen to it for a week, you would notice a positive change in your outlook.

We are fortunate to have 2 local christian radio stations.  WBCL in Fort Wayne, Indiana and YES FM in Toledo, Ohio.  Both of them can be heard online around the world.

So there you go – just another thought to pass along to you on this wintery Valentines Day.  If you are feeling alone – know that Jesus has His arms open and waiting just for you.  Find some christian music online – if you listen close – you will hear Him talking right to you – right where you are – wherever you are.  He is there.Image
